Willow Tits

Willow Tits have been in sharp decline for some years now and so despite the harsh winter it has been great to track down 5 pairs at Messingham Sand Quarries.  Earlier in the spring we identified five pairs and found two nest sites and today we watched as one pair were continually taking food in to one of the nest. This nest site was specifically set up by the reserve’s Wardens in as much as they put in the stump of an old Birch and started the excavation of a hole which has now been fully excavated by the Willow Tits and fingers crossed will successfully rear their brood.  All these images were digiscoped some 300 metres away so fear not we did not disturb the birds!

  1. The Queen hornet is chewing up the rotten wood to pulp it to paper, which she will then use to build her nest. Shes done well to survive the harsh winter you've just endured.
