Taken this morning in the pouring rain!
Another good bird for Lincolnshire - a Red-Rumped Swallow at Barton - good views to be had with the bird skimming our heads at one point! All our photos have been rubbish recently hence video clips but they’re pretty awful too but until we get rid of black clouds, pouring rain and howling easterlies photos unlikely to improve.
Thankfully I can always get a “not bad” image from our friend Mr Graham Catley, to see more click here http://pewit.blogspot.co.uk/
Yet another rarity in Lincolnshire and another Lincolnshire tick for us if accepted by the BBRC, this female Bufflehead dropped in yesterday at Covenham Reservoir near Louth and luckily we were able to see it late afternoon - no sign of it today!
Yesterday saw a large influx of Ring Ouzels into the country so having had 4 on the same day last year in the Park I headed in first thing this morning full of expectation and saw precisely nothing! Not deterred we headed up to Bagmoor this evening and immediately had two adult Little Gulls hawking over the lake but they soon headed off North probably to the Humber so we decided to go up there ourselves, Whitton to be precise. The rain continued to pour down so we stayed in the car looking over the marsh and watched in the space of 20 minutes this very wet Short-Eared Owl, 4 Whimbrel, a Stonechat and a fabulous Hen Harrier
…….meant whilst we sat in the car waiting for the rain to stop Wayne caught a fleeting glimpse of a bird down below the car park and on closer inspection found this beautiful male Redstart. So out the car in the rain watching the Redstart when Wayne shouts again “Osprey” and we were then treated so a five minute display of an Osprey above our heads before it drifted off over Black Walk Nook. It was amazing how many people were coming and going in the car park and no one noticed either bird, I suppose we all get complacent in car parks!
I have always dreamed of having a Red Kite over the Park and this afternoon came very close as a Red Kite floated over my car as I approached the next village along from Normanby - Flixborough. Unfortunately no camera but scope on front seat meant good views were had as it drifted over Atkinson’s Warren and over to Scunthorpe. As it was just outside the parish boundary I can’t count it as a parish tick but fingers crossed it may hang around and drift back over Normanby. Luckilly I saw it inbetween showers and in full sun so it looked stunning - interestingly I couldn't see any wing tags on it.
Sacred Ibis at Alkborough this morning is probably the same bird seen yesterday in the south of the county as both had metal ring on left leg.
A flock of 55 Twite have been at Alkborough and are occasionally heard in song as displayed in this little video filmed by Neil Drinkall.
