An experience of a lifetime!

We had no idea what to expect when we saw the roadside signs alerting us to bats and wasn't particular excited when the Hotel Calakmul receptionist told us to hurry if we were going to catch the 5.15 pm bat roost leaving.  So we headed off up the road and not knowing particularly where to go as nothing was signposted we started to walk up a side track off the main highway - within a couple of minutes we heard a rustle and there was our second Thicket Tinamou but it didn't look right for bats so we returned to the highway and luckilly a car drew up and its driver asked us if we were looking for bats!  We were on the wrong side of the road but within minutes we were walking through a wooded trail and were soon standing on the edge of a cavern looking down and then.....

This experience was up there with the big cats of South Africa or the Gorillas in Uganda, it was amazing - we could feel the draught as the bats whirled up in front of us and then sped off over the woods - who knows how many bats emerge I have seen estimates of up to 6 million!
