Calakmul Ruins

Another set of ruins surrounded in forest near the Guatemalan border - these had a 60km entrance road where we saw but didn't photograph a number of Ocellated Turkeys crossing from one side to the other we also had a number of Great Curassows which I will come to later.  We had a lot of birds at Calakmul and of course the bat cave which was a massive highlight but this is also where I fell and wrecked my binoculars which isn't ideal a week in to a birding holiday!

The 60km approach road - spot the Long-tailed Coati

The view from the top..

We stayed at the Calakmul Puerta Hotel which at 160usd a night was way over priced for a basic room and one small piece of toast for breakfast but if you want to bird at 6.00am and you have to drive 60km first then there is no other option!
