A taste of things to come from a recent trip to North-West Argentina.
A Diademed Sandpiper-Plover seen at 4500 masl in the Andes close to the Bolivian border. It was a major task just getting to the area where this bird occurs with a rough drive on a gravel road with hairpin bends and big drops which is listed on the most dangerous roads in the world website.
It was very tough at this altitude but we were not the only ones suffering as our poor old hire car was suffering too with the engine management light coming on and a drop in power due to the shortage of oxygen.
We finally made it over the Abra del Lizoite pass where gale force winds blew through and then dropped down a few metres into a more sheltered valley and began our search for this little gem. It took several hours searching up and down the valley in a demanding terrain that left us breathless and a little light headed but it was all worth it in the end for the star bird of the trip.
